Sculptor from Quebec captures title in 14th annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Contest

HAMPTON BEACH, New Hampshire — A six-time contestant finally captured first place at the 14th annual Hampton Beach Sand Sculpting Competition.

Guy-Oliver Deveau of Quebec will go home with top honors and the $3,000 prize for his elaborate sand sculpture inspired by the movie "Alien."

Deveau placed second last year.

Deveau told WMUR ( ) after Saturday's awards ceremony that he's always wanted to win and that he was feeling great about the victory.

Karen Fralich of Quebec placed second and defending champion Carl Jara of Ohio placed third.

The People's Choice award went to Michel Lepire of Quebec, who placed third in 2013.

The sculptors had a total of 24 hours over three days to complete their works. Each got a private plot and 10 tons of sand.
