SHREVEPORT, Louisiana — A Shreveport man is believed to have fatally shot one of two masked men in an apparent overnight home invasion that also involved illegal drugs, police said Tuesday.
The man believed to have fired the fatal shot was identified as Austin Holstead, 21. Officers were trying to establish the identity of the dead man and a second suspect, who was on the run Tuesday after the gunfire at Holstead's residence.
"Preliminary information gathered at the scene suggests two masked men entered the home, at least one of which was armed with a semi-automatic rifle," police said in a news release.
Police said Holstead discovered the intruders and shot one.
Holstead was not charged in the death. But police booked him on charges of cruelty to a juvenile and illegal use of a weapon with illegal narcotics present. That's because an unspecified number of minor children were in the home at the time of the shooting, and because police found drugs at the home. The children were not injured, but child-welfare authorities were notified.
A 23-year-old woman, Kimberly Dowden, of the same address, also was booked with cruelty to a juvenile.
Police said a vehicle they believe was used in the invasion was impounded at the scene.
