BUXTON, North Carolina — The massive stones that once held up the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse are being dedicated as the new Keeper of the Light Amphitheatre.
The dedication ceremony will be held Saturday in Buxton. After the dedication, visitors can climb the lighthouse for free for a few hours.
When the lighthouse was moved inland in 2010 from its erosion-prone spot on the Atlantic, the stones stayed behind. A nonprofit group paid to have the stones engraved with the names of the 83 light keepers.
But as erosion continued to threaten the area, Hatteras Island residents pushed the National Park Service to relocate the stones near the lighthouse again. Earlier this year, they were moved and placed to create a seating area adjacent to the Hatteras Island Visitor Center.
