SLIDELL, Louisiana — Authorities say an Amtrak train and a pick-up truck collided Sunday night in Slidell when the truck's driver drove around a crossing gate in an attempt to beat the train. Officials say no one was injured.
St. Tammany Parish Fire District spokesman Chad Duffaut says the train struck the truck and separated the truck's cab and its bed.
Duffaut says the driver fled the scene but eventually returned. Nola.comThe Times-Picayune reports (http://bit.ly/1vCpCzA ) the parish Sheriff's Office arrested the driver. Deputies could not immediately be reached for details.
The collision happened around 6:30 p.m. at a crossing at U.S. Highway 11 and Brownswitch Road.
Duffaut says the Amtrak train resumed its southward journey after authorities completed their investigation at the scene.
Amtrak officials could not be reached immediately for comment.
