DETROIT — A large fire has gutted an apartment building on Detroit's east side, displacing nine families.
The fire was reported late Monday and crews were on the scene in bitterly cold temperatures on Tuesday morning.
The temperature was 5 degrees at midnight with 12 mile-per-hour southwest winds.
Senior Chief Larry Gassel tells the Detroit Free Press that about 50 firefighters responded. He says one firefighter was treated and released after a slip and fall.
The Detroit News says nine families lived in the building, which had about 30 units in all. No residents were reported injured.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation
