BAYONNE, New Jersey — Northbound lanes on the Bayonne Bridge have reopened.

They were closed for little more than 40 minutes Thursday as part of ongoing construction.

All traffic heading from Staten Island into Bayonne was stopped while contractors demolished a concrete toll island adjacent to the bridge's northbound lanes.

Southbound traffic was not affected.

The closure is part of a $1.2 billion project to raise the roadway to give larger ships access to New York and New Jersey ports.

The new bridge roadway will have wider lanes and a median.
