FORT DODGE, Iowa — The trial of a man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in a Northwood park has been postponed.

The trial of 40-year-old Tyrone Washington Jr. has been scheduled to start Oct. 20 in Webster County. On Friday, Judge Colleen Weiland granted a request to continue the trial by Washington's attorney, who has raised concerns about the lack of racial diversity among the trial's jury pool.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports ( ) that a telephone conference will be conducted on Oct. 31 to determine a new trial date.

Washington is accused of fatally stabbing 30-year-old Justina Smith, also of Northwood, last year. He has pleaded not guilty.

His trial was moved from Worth County to Webster County.
