New York man convicted in cigarette trafficking case in Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia — A New York man has been convicted in a cigarette trafficking case in Louisa County.

Media outlets report 27-year-old Fateh Al-Hayani was convicted Wednesday in Louisa County Circuit Court of trying to traffic nearly 8,000 packs of cigarettes.

Virginia State Police stopped Al-Hayani on Interstate 64 for a traffic violation last November and spotted several black garbage bags containing cases of cigarettes in his vehicle. Prosecutors say he admitted buying the cigarettes in Virginia with the intent of transporting them for sale in New York.

Al-Hayani was assessed a civil penalty of about $38,000 and is scheduled to be sentenced in the criminal case Nov. 30.
