3rd defendant in UMass rape case heads to trial; jury selection scheduled for Monday

NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts — The third of four men charged with raping a University of Massachusetts freshman in her Amherst dorm room nearly three years ago is scheduled to go to trial this week.

Jury selection in the trial of 21-year-old Adam Liccardi is scheduled to start Monday in Hampshire Superior Court.

Liccardi, of Pittsfield, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated rape. His lawyer has consistently said the sex was consensual.

Four young men, all either 17 or 18 at the time, were charged with raping the woman in October 2012. None of the suspects was a UMass student, but they all knew her. The woman, who drank alcohol and smoked marijuana with the defendants, told police she didn't consent to sex.

The two defendants already tried were both convicted.
