BLUEFIELD, West Virginia — A federal inmate in West Virginia has pleaded guilty to possessing a weapon.

Prosecutors said Thursday that 34-year-old Rico Joy entered the plea in federal court in Bluefield.

Joy admitted to having a shank, or homemade knife, in April at the Federal Correctional Institution at McDowell near Welch.

Joy is serving a 20-year sentence stemming from a 2007 conviction in South Carolina for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He faces up to five additional years in prison. Sentencing is set for Aug. 15.
