5-month-old boy killed by falling tree in New York's Finger Lakes region

WATKINS GLEN, New York — State police are investigating the death of a five-month-old boy in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.

Troopers and the Schuyler County Sheriff's Office say the infant was at Catherine Valley Creek off the south end of Seneca Lake on Wednesday afternoon with his parents and 12-year-old sister when a tree unexpectedly fell on top of the two children.

Authorities say the infant boy was killed, but his sister escaped unharmed.

Catherine Creek Fish and Wildlife Management area is an unusual natural area between Watkins Glen and Montour Falls. Sedimentation and manipulation of the lake level has led to the formation of a 1,000-acre marsh complex.
