HOUMA, Louisiana — A 32-year-old Schriever woman accused of fatally shooting her ex-husband could face life in prison, because a grand jury upgraded her initial charge to second-degree murder.

The Terrebonne Parish District Attorney's Office tells The Courier ( ) Crystal Welch was initially charged with manslaughter Aug. 21, 2013, after allegedly shooting 35-year-old Chade Welch, of Gray, twice in the chest.

Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said the shooting happened outside a house Crystal Welch shared with two of their children.

First Assistant District Attorney Carlos Lazarus said the facts and circumstances surrounding the shooting were enough to warrant an increased charge but declined to comment on specific evidence.

Defense attorney Matthew Ory said the increased charge will not affect his plan to argue for self-defense in Crystal Welch's case.
