PORTLAND, Maine — The Nova Star ferry that spent the summer taking passengers between Portland and Nova Scotia will spend the winter in Charleston, South Carolina.
The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1B7ohIL ) reports the ferry left its berth in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, early on Thursday morning. Nova Star cruises President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Amundsen says the cruise line has been unable to secure winter work for the ferry. He says keeping the ship in a warmer winter climate will save money and make it easier to keep the ferry ready if off-season work is found.
Nova Star spokesman Sean Lewis says the company hasn't ruled out the possibility of finding winter work for the ferry before the cruise season starts.
