NEW ORLEANS — The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport says last year saw a record number of passengers going through the airport.

The airport says it served about 10.6 million passengers in 2015, which was 9.1 percent more than the previous year. The airport says the best year on record prior to last year was in 2000 when 9.8 million passengers used the airport.

The airport attributed the increase in passengers to a growth in the number of airlines and addition of non-stop destinations, including to four cities outside the United States. There are 14 airlines now flying out of the airport.

Officials expect more growth at the airport with the construction of a new terminal.
