Touchdown pass in final seconds sends Ennis past Cedar Park 38-35 for 5A Division II title

ARLINGTON, Texas — Donta Thompson scored the winning touchdown on a 36-yard pass with 21 seconds remaining, and Ennis won its fifth state title with a 38-35 victory against Cedar Park in the Class 5A Division II championship game Friday night.

The winning play was set up when Ennis (14-2) converted a third-and-19 with a hook-and-ladder play. Quarterback Devin Smith threw to Alston Lawrence, who pitched back to running back Taylor Thompson for a 31-yard game.

On the next play, Smith threw the winning pass to Donta Thompson, who had 99 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Cedar Park's Amir Alzer had two scoring passes on fourth-and-long, including a 21-yarder to David Fiala for a 35-31 lead with 4:21 remaining.

Thomas Hutchings had 18 carries for 155 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown in the second quarter, for Cedar Park (12-4).

Smith threw for threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns while adding 53 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Ennis won in its first trip to the finals since 2004, when the Lions won their third title in a five-year span. Their other championship came in 1975. Ennis is 5-0 in title games.

Cedar Park lost two years after beating Lancaster in its first trip to the championship game.

Ennis led 17-0 before Cedar Park rattled off three straight touchdowns in the second quarter to take the lead.

Cedar Park pulled within 17-14 on Alzer's 22-yard scoring pass to Fiala the first play after Cedar Park was awarded a first down when a third-and-1 run appeared short on the measurement.

Ennis defensive back Trey Edwards had three interceptions, but the Lions offset that with three fumbles.
