GILLETTE, Wyoming — Five wild foxes have been taken to the Campbell County Animal Shelter since May after people tried to keep them as pets.
The Gillette News-Record reported Wednesday (http://tinyurl.com/o7jatqv ) that it's illegal to keep foxes as pets in most parts of the county.
County Animal Control supervisor Phyllis Jassek is trying to place two 6-month old fox kits with an animal-rescue operation in Idaho. At least two others had to be euthanized.
Jassek thinks the spike in fox numbers is probably the result of a fad. She says a few year ago, some people were trying to keep raccoons as pets.
It's illegal to keep foxes as pets in the Gillette city limits. In the county, it's legal if people more than 12 miles from a subdivision.
