MERIDIAN, Mississippi — A Meridian teacher has received a big surprise for doing what she loves — educating students.

Rhonda Burrage, a math teacher at Magnolia Middle School, was surprised Wednesday with a $25,000 Milken Educator Award during a schoolwide assembly attended by state Superintendent of Education Dr. Carey Wright.

Burrage, the Meridian Public School District's teacher of the year, is the only teacher in Mississippi to receive the award this year.

The Milken Educator Awards' senior vice president, Dr. Jane Foley, says Burrage is an exceptional instructor and students are engaged through her innovative teaching strategies and use of technology. Wright says Burrage's commitment to excellence and dedication to her students is worthy of recognition.

The awards program was launched by the Milken Family Foundation in 1987. Visit http://www.MilkenEducatorAwards.org for more information.
