PHOENIX — A temporary closure of the main range of the Arizona Game and Fish Department's flagship shooting facility is scheduled later this spring to make planned improvements.
The department says the work at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility's main range will include raising the earthen berm that serves as a backstop for 67 shooting stations.
The department also says there will be new sound-dampening insulation under the steel canopy and new light fixtures for all shooting stations.
According the department, the $100,000 of improvements will require closing the main range between May 27 and June 3. Adjacent specialty ranges also will be closed.
Range manager Christopher Dean says the closure's timing follows the Memorial Day holiday and should minimize the inconvenience to recreational shooters.
