NEWPORT, Vermont — A Vermont couple has pleaded not guilty to running an elaborate deer poaching operation.

The Caledonian Record reports ( 66-year-year old Wayne Dion pleaded not guilty Tuesday to nine misdemeanors. His wife, 61-year-old Jennie Dion, pleaded not guilty to possessing a big game animal taken by illegal means.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife wardens accused the couple of deer baiting and illegal night hunting practices. They said a search of their Irasburg home last year showed chest freezers and several plastic totes containing corn and apples, which they believed was used to bait deer. They also found a dead deer inside the house which they said was taken before the start of rifle hunting season.

Authorities also found five spotlights pointed toward a backyard enclosed by a 400-foot cedar hedge.
