SEATTLE — Thousands of people gathered in downtown Seattle on Sunday for the city's 40th annual Pride Parade.

This year's theme — "Generations of Pride"— honors civil rights battles in the city that elected its first openly gay mayor last November.

Actor George Takei, who played in the "Star Trek" TV show and movies and is now an activist for gay and civil rights, is celebrity grand marshal of the Seattle parade.

The pride celebration includes a day of concerts at three different locations around Seattle, a "doggie drag" costume contest and thousands of people who are dressed up as well.

The parade — along Fourth Avenue — was expected to be the largest in Seattle Pride history, with an estimated 200 groups participating, including organizers from the 1974 event.
