ASPEN, Colorado — A man accused of killing his aunt and uncle in El Jebel after what witnesses say was an argument with the aunt about the family dog has been given time to get a mental evaluation before he enters his plea.

The Aspen Times reports ( ) Williams Amaya made the request Wednesday, and the judge agreed to set a hearing Jan. 28.

Amaya is accused of shooting 40-year-old Mayra Lopez and her husband, 42-year-old Eliseo Lopez, on July 12 at their home, where Amaya had been living. The coroner says they were each shot four times.

Amaya has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts attempted first-degree murder. The latter charges were filed after investigators said he also targeted the couple's teenage sons.
