RALEIGH, North Carolina — Tre Marsh returned an interception for a touchdown and C.J. Freeman ran for a score to help Northern Guilford beat Weddington 14-7 on Saturday in the Class 3-AA North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.
Cam Harris was named the game's most valuable player for the Nighthawks (15-1), who have won four titles in five years.
Harris threw for 136 yards and ran for 35 more.
Marsh and Freeman gave Northern Guilford a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Weddington (14-2) got on the board with a 1-yard scoring run from Brendan Assencao late in the half, but neither team scored again.
Weddington had one final chance to tie, driving to the Northern Guilford 18-yard line in the final minute. But Grayson Willingham threw incomplete on third down, and his fourth-down pass to Joe Bensch came up 1 yard short to give the ball back to Northern Guilford with 11 seconds left.
