DURHAM, North Carolina — An investigation is being launched in the wake of an inmate's death at the Durham County jail.

Media outlets reported Monday that the Durham County Department of Public Health will investigate the Jan. 19 death of 29-year-old Matthew Lamont McCain.

Officials say McCain was found unresponsive about 30 minutes after he had last been checked. McCain couldn't be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said in a news release that the department will review the inmate's medical chart, assess the clinical care practices at the facility and review any medical grievances made by the inmate.

Records show McCain had been in jail since August on charges of assault on a female, assault with a deadly weapon, battery of an unborn child, communicating threats and domestic criminal trespass.
