POLKTON, North Carolina — Federal and state authorities are looking into an Anson County prison, where an inmate was killed during a riot almost two years ago.
Among the agencies involved in the investigation are the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State Bureau of Investigation and the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Spokeswoman Pamela Walker of the state Division of Public Safety said there is no specific focus to the investigation. Walker said the investigation is designed to determine what is going on at the prison and what preemptive measures are needed.
In the inmate's death, the N.C. Department of Public Safety said 35-year-old Wesley Turner died after a fight broke out at Lanesboro in September 2012.
The facility is a high security prison in Polkton, about 45 miles southeast of Charlotte. It has 1,000 cells.
