Federal judge rules that lawsuits stemming from 2013 Bald Head ferry accident may proceed


BALD HEAD ISLAND, North Carolina — A federal judge has ruled that lawsuits stemming from a ferry accident in North Carolina almost two years ago may proceed in court.

Local media outlets report that Judge James Fox this week refused to dismiss the lawsuits filed against Bald Head Island Transportation in the December 2013 accident.

Thirteen passengers and one crew member were hurt when the ferry Adventure ran aground ran when it was moving at about 22 mph.

Fox said the ferry operator either knew or should have known that the captain was inattentive while operating the ferry.

The ferry runs between Southport and Bald Head Island in Brunswick County southwest of Wilmington.
