Brushfire in Riverside County prompts evacuation of mobile home park

THERMAL, California — Riverside County firefighters are starting to get a handle on an 80-acre brushfire that forced the temporary evacuation of 20 mobile homes.

The blaze in the desert town of Thermal is now 40 percent contained.

The fire began around 10:15 a.m. Monday about 130 miles southeast of Los Angeles and burned heavy brush along with tamarisk and palm trees.

County fire Capt. Lucas Spelman says at times, the flames were 15 feet high but the flames are now laying down.

A mobile home park nearby was evacuated, but residents were allowed to return several hours later.

About 60 firefighters are battling the flames. Two were treated at a hospital for non- life threatening injuries.

There's no word on what caused the fire.
