NEWARK, Delaware — A Newark man has been struck and killed while attempting to cross a road.

State police say 42-year-old James E. Duff was hit Thursday night while trying to walk across East Chestnut Hill Road outside the Holy Family Church in Newark.

Police spokesman Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale says Duff was treated at the scene by New Castle County paramedics and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, 44-year-old Donald Lane of Newark, was uninjured and stopped his vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway.

The Holy Family Church is currently holding Holy Family Summerfest, a carnival with live music and rides. Police did not say if Duff had attended the carnival.

Police are still investigating the crash and have not filed any charges against Lane.
