Family of Lacona woman fatally shot in her home files wrongful death lawsuit against her son


LACONA, Iowa — The family of a rural Iowa woman found fatally shot in her home has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her son.

KCCI-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1RIwjyy ) that 68-year-old Shirley Carter was found dead in her Lacona home in June.

Shirley Carter's estate, her husband Bill Carter, their daughter Jana Lain and son Billy Carter have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the couple's other son, Jason Carter.

The lawsuit says Jason Carter killed Shirley Carter. It seeks damages for funeral expenses, loss of income as well as pain and suffering and calls for a jury trial.

No charges have been filed in the case.

Bill Carter says that the last time he talked with Jason Carter, the defendant told him he was innocent.

It wasn't immediately known if Jason Carter has an attorney.
