ST. LOUIS — Authorities are searching for a man accused of firing at a St. Louis County police officer and grazing his gun belt.

Police said a Velda City officer returned gunfire early Sunday at the suspect, who has been identified as 27-year-old Eric Fowler. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1rSjNlB) reports that it's not known if he was wounded.

Fowler was charged later Sunday with assault first-degree on a police officer and armed criminal action. Police said Fowler should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police said officers had been called to a disturbance at a house. Gunfire erupted when officers approached a vehicle to speak to the driver.

The St. Louis County officer was treated at a hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Police have recovered the vehicle that was driven from the scene.
