WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina — James Smith rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another and Charlotte Mallard Creek beat Wake Forest 25-14 on Saturday night in the Class 4-AA North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.
Smith, the game MVP, rushed for 186 yards and passed for 108 more to help the Mavericks (15-1) beat the Cougars (15-1) in the title game for the second straight year.
Smith scored on runs of 70, 37 and 1 yard and threw a 23-yard TD pass to Kyle Horton.
Bryce Love rushed for 186 yards with a 3-yard touchdown for Wake Forest, and Mack Moore's 18-yard TD pass to Brooks Cunningham pulled the Cougars to 19-14 with 7:28 remaining.
Smith's short scoring run with 5:09 left put the game away for Mallard Creek.
Dexter Lawrence of Mallard Creek blocked an extra point and a punt, and Wake Forest's Amari Henderson blocked two field goal attempts.
