PORTLAND, Oregon — The Oregon State Police is investigating an inmate's death at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario.
The Corrections Department says 53-year-old John McKinley died early Tuesday, about an hour after his cellmate alerted staff that McKinley needed medical help.
State police investigate all unexpected prison deaths. The agency has yet to say if this one involved foul play.
Several Snake River inmates have died at the hands of other prisoners in recent years.
McKinley entered prison in November 2008 on convictions of sodomy and unlawful use of a weapon. His earliest release date was in 2038.
The Oregonian reported in 2008 that McKinley sexually assaulted a woman in Portland while threatening her with a knife. Two decades earlier, he was convicted of sexually assaulting prostitutes in Washington state.
