COLUMBUS, Mississippi — Columbus will have a budget of almost $23 million for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.

The Commercial Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/X86H5P) the City Council approved the budget earlier this week.

The city is forecast to have a deficit of about $300,000, which council members say would be covered from money remaining at the end of the current fiscal year or from the city's reserve cash fund.

Public safety gets the largest share of the new budget, with about $13.8 million allocated to fire and police operations.
