Savannah police marine patrol unit rescues boaters who ran into engine trouble and bad weather

SAVANNAH, Georgia — Authorities say they rescued three boaters who ran into trouble as they tried to return to Savannah from a fishing trip.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Eunicia Baker said in an email Saturday that the boaters needed help after encountering engine trouble in dangerous weather conditions.

She said marine patrol officers were dispatched around 11:25 a.m. to the sound between Dafuski Island and the Savannah River. Strong waves had pushed their boat into large rocks, causing it to take on water, and the boaters sought safety on the rocks.

Marine patrol retrieved the men and brought them to the President Street boat ramp. No injuries were reported.
