MANATEE, Florida — A Tampa Bay area man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting a lifelong friend.

A Manatee County judge sentenced 71-year-old George Williamson Jr. on Wednesday. He was convicted in February of manslaughter with a firearm.

Authorities say 65-year-old Willie Lee Jones was found shot multiple times at Williamson's home in January 2014. No motive was ever identified. The two men had worked together for the city of Palmetto.

Jones was also known as a local football star. He attended Lincoln Memorial High School and then went on to the University of Tampa. The Bradenton Herald (http://goo.gl/pYktwD ) reports that Jones was drafted by the Miami Dolphins but failed to reach a financial agreement. He went on to play in the World Football League and Canadian Football League.
