CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Police have charged a man with a hit and run death that killed a man on a moped in Charlotte.

Multiple media outlets reported that 43-year-old Angel Zarate Cruz was on a moped Saturday night when he had stopped and was waiting to turn left into a shopping center parking lot.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a car struck the moped from behind, pushing it into the oncoming lane where Cruz was hit again.

The driver of the first car to hit Cruz left. Cruz died at the scene.

A witness got the tag number. Police have charged 51-year-old James Lesage with driving while impaired, felony hit and run and felony death by vehicle. It was not clear if he has an attorney to comment on the charges.
