The 36th edition of the Empire State Winter Games is set to get underway

LAKE PLACID, New York — The 36th edition of the Empire State Winter Games is set to get underway.

A four-day torch run starting next Monday kicks off the annual event. Opening Ceremony is the evening of Feb. 4 in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena at the Lake Placid Olympic Center.

Competitions are set to take place through Feb. 7 in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Paul Smiths and Malone.

More than 1,200 athletes have registered so far, with a goal of 1,800. Organizers say figure skating has experienced a 14 percent growth in numbers over last year.

Athletes will compete in several contemporary action sports, such as slopestyle and big-air features for skiers and snowboarders, and cash prizes worth a total of $8,000 will be awarded.
