PORTLAND, Oregon — Police in Portland say a man wounded by police after he ran toward them with a knife is expected to survive.

Police on Monday identified the man as 47-year-old Michael Shawn Harrison. He was hospitalized in critical condition with gunshot wounds as well as several serious self-inflicted cuts to his arms and abdomen.

On Sunday, police responded to a call from a woman who said she was hiding in her southeast Portland basement with two young children after a man with a knife and blood on his hands broke into her house. Officers were able to evacuate the woman and children safely.

A police spokesman says the man later came out of the house armed with a kitchen knife and ran toward officers. One fired a less-lethal shotgun and another officer fired a handgun.

Sgt. Martin Padilla and Officer Raelynn McKay are on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
