IMPERIAL, Missouri — A 56-year-old Jefferson County man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in his estranged wife's death.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (bit.ly/1uBhVNa ) reports that Matthew McDonough of Imperial pleaded guilty Monday in Jefferson County Circuit Court to the death of his former wife Deborah.

The couple was going through a divorce and Deborah McDonough was living in St. Louis when she was killed in July 2012 at their former home.

Police say Matthew McDonough told their 9-year-old son that his 38-year-old wife was sleeping as she lay dead on a bed. The couple's 13-year-old daughter was also home at the time.

McDonough told police that his wife had said she wanted custody of their children.
