KITTY HAWK, North Carolina — State workers will repair a section of N.C. Highway 12 in Kitty Hawk that collapsed during a weekend nor'easter.

The state Transportation Department closed a section of the road early Saturday after waves from the nor'easter washed away both 500 feet of dune in the area along with sand from under the road. A portion of the northbound lane then collapsed Saturday evening, resulting in 200 feet of pavement damage.

State workers were preparing Monday to make temporary repairs, including removing damaged pavement and refilling the area with sand. Once the sand is in place, they will then pave the area so traffic can resume.

Officials expect the road to reopen by the end of the week.

The state also is working to get permits to reconstruct the dune.
