NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina — The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of an inmate at the Charleston County jail.

Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson told local media that officers making rounds found a woman unresponsive late Wednesday afternoon. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.

Watson said the woman had been jailed Tuesday by Charleston County sheriff's deputies on a shoplifting charge.

Watson said the woman had been seen at a local hospital for an apparent medical issue Tuesday before she was booked into the jail.

The coroner's office has ordered an autopsy.
