AKRON, Ohio — A northeast Ohio man convicted in the slayings of his ex-girlfriend and their 5-year-old son has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A jury had voted to spare 41-year-old Daniel Tighe (teye) from a potential death sentence. A judge on Wednesday sentenced the Akron man to life in prison plus at least 17 years.

His attorneys have previously said Tighe denies responsibility. They didn't immediately return messages left around the close of business Wednesday.

Tighe was arrested in the 2013 deaths of 31-year-old Wendy Ralston and their son, Peyton, after Ralston's mother found the decomposed remains wrapped in bedding in woods near her daughter's home in Tallmadge (TAL'-mihj).

Tighe was convicted of charges including domestic violence, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.
