PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Six Providence residents were left homeless after a fire tore through their apartment building, but no one was injured.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on Commodore Avenue shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Officials say it began in the first-floor apartment and spread to the ceiling before firefighters were able to put it out. Two of the six residents of the building were home at the time and got out safely.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

A resident of the second floor, Carmelo Contreras, told WPRI-TV that he was watching TV when he heard screams from the first-floor apartment. He said he went downstairs and saw flames shooting everywhere.

Contreras and a woman in the first-floor apartment escaped to safety.
