PITTSBURGH — Misdemeanor charges have been dismissed against a Pittsburgh police sergeant in an arrest he made during a high school football championship game last fall.

An Allegheny County district judge on Monday threw out the simple assault and official oppression counts against Sgt. Stephen Matakovich.

The city's public safety department said he was working a uniformed off-duty detail at Heinz Field on Nov. 28 when he arrested a man on charges of criminal trespass, aggravated assault and public drunkenness.

But officials said a security recording of the arrest didn't support his version of events.

Matakovich, who did not comment after the hearing, has been on paid administrative leave.
