CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — A trial has been delayed for a northeast Iowa man accused of assaulting a police officer before the officer shot him.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says ( ) a trial date of Jan. 6 has been set for 28-year-old Zachary Church. He's charged with assault on a peace officer and possession of marijuana for sale. His trial had been scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Cedar Falls officer Bob Anderson has said he approached Church while Church was asleep behind the wheel of a running car on Dec. 25. Anderson reported that Church suddenly began punching him. Anderson said he felt himself losing consciousness and warned Church that he would shoot him if he didn't stop. Anderson then shot Church twice.

Church has pleaded not guilty.
