LEWISTON, Maine — The sixth Dempsey Challenge is drawing to a conclusion with cycling events around Maine's second-largest city.
Patrick Dempsey, who grew up nearby, is among more than 1,000 cyclists taking part in fundraising rides ranging from 10 to 100 miles, followed by closing ceremonies on Sunday.
The "Grey's Anatomy" actor launched the Dempsey Challenge following the experience of his 77-year-old mother's battles with ovarian cancer. She passed away in March.
The Dempsey Challenge raises money for Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Last year's event raised $1.1 million.
