PHOENIX — A Phoenix mother is facing child abuse charges for allegedly giving her baby and two toddlers an over-the-counter sleep aid meant for adults.

Phoenix police say Shelby Henrickson is being held on suspicion of one count of child abuse and two counts of endangerment.

Police say Hendrickson's 10-month-old son was rushed to Phoenix Children's Hospital and into intensive care on Nov. 4.

Hendrickson allegedly gave the infant ZzzQuil, whose main ingredient diphenhydramine.

The product packaging clearly states that the sleep aid shouldn't be given to children younger than 12.

Court paperwork shows Hendrickson told police that she also gave ZzzQuil to her other children, ages 2 and 3.

Toxicology results revealed Hendrickson's baby son had nicotine poisoning and may have been chewing on cigarette butts to solve teething problems.
