Jury convicts driver of vehicular homicide in 2012 crash on Garden State Parkway

HACKENSACK, New Jersey — A jury has convicted a northern New Jersey man in a road-rage incident that led to a fatal crash on the Garden State Parkway in 2012.

Thomas Vanderweit was found guilty Thursday of vehicular homicide in the death of 63-year-old Annetta Billingy, who was on her way to church.

Prosecutors say the Saddle Brook man was driving on the parkway in July 2012 when he encountered another motorist, John Emili. Witnesses say the two vehicles were close to each other and were speeding for about three miles.

Investigators say Vanderweit "brake-checked" the vehicle, touching off an accident that ejected Billingy from Emili's car. She died at a hospital.

Vanderweit faces up to 10 years behind bars when he's sentenced on Dec. 18.

Emili is being tried separately in the case.
