MALIBU, California — Los Angeles County firefighters are gaining the upper hand on a small brush fire that erupted in Malibu in the middle of a heat wave.

The fire began Friday morning in brushy hills above Pacific Coast Highway.

Fire Inspector Chris Reade says the 2 ½-acre fire is 75 percent contained and should be out by nightfall.

Winds are light and the blaze is creeping slowly down the side of a ridgeline through 6-foot-high chaparral.

No injuries, evacuations or threats to buildings are reported.

Water-dropping helicopters and camp crews with shovels and chainsaws are fighting the flames.

To the northwest, Ventura County firefighters are trying to surround an approximately 22-acre blaze in a riverbed. No injuries or structural damage has been reported since that fire broke out Thursday afternoon.
