FLAGSTAFF, Arizona — Northern Arizona University is welcoming its largest freshman class in school history.

The tally of 5,141 is based on the start of classes Monday. That beats out the record set by last year's freshman class of 4,765 in the fall.

The university also is seeing increases in enrollment of Asian and American Indian students, and graduate and online programs. The overall student population rose from 27,639 last fall to 29,035 this year.

The Flagstaff-based university has more than two dozen campuses around the state and serves students online.

It releases the official 21-day enrollment numbers in September.

University spokeswoman Cindy Brown says the school typically sees the numbers go up between the first day of classes and the official count.
