Prosecutor: Burkina Faso military general, former foreign minister charged after failed coup

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — A military prosecutor says the general who took power after last month's coup now has been formally charged along with one other formal top official accused of supporting the overthrow of Burkina Faso's government.

Gen. Gilbert Diendere now will stand trial before a military tribunal after making an appearance earlier Tuesday, according to the prosecutor who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

Djibril Bassole, who served as foreign minister under the longtime president whose supporters are accused of backing the coup, also faces charges of attacking national security.

Bassole has denied any participation in the coup, which was carried out by Diendere and members of the presidential guard loyal to ex-President Blaise Compaore.
